MUMBULU TRAILS CAMPS

Mumbulu Trails is an intimate, family-owned safari operation set within an exclusive 15,000-acre private concession in the remote northern reaches of South Luangwa National Park.

With more than three decades of experience in Zambia’s safari industry, owner James Zulu carries a deep personal connection to the Luangwa Valley. His knowledge and guiding philosophy were shaped under the mentorship of some of Zambia’s pioneering safari figures, including the legendary Norman Carr.

From June to November, Mumbulu Trails explores the wild and dramatic northeastern corner of the national park. Situated between the Luangwa and Mupamadzi rivers, this secluded concession offers some of the finest walking-safari terrain in South Luangwa.

The experience is designed for guests seeking privacy, authenticity and a close connection to the wilderness, far from the busier areas of the park.

Mumbulu Private Safari Camp is an intimate eight-bed tented camp overlooking the Luangwa River.

The camp is available exclusively to private groups of four to eight guests, creating a relaxed and highly personalised safari experience. Comfortable safari tents provide a peaceful retreat, while the central mess tent is the welcoming heart of the camp—a place to enjoy freshly prepared meals, share stories and relax between activities.

Kasansanya Fly Camp

Kasansanya is a secluded four-bed tented fly camp created for guests who wish to venture even deeper into the wilderness.

The camp offers the same comfortable style of tented accommodation as the main camp, while maintaining a lighter and more adventurous footprint. The emphasis is on simplicity, seclusion and complete immersion in the sights, sounds and rhythms of the Luangwa bush.

Exploring This Corner of the Luangwa

Our expedition begins beside a luafwa—a seasonal river bend shaped by the ever-changing course of the Luangwa River. Majestic sausage trees rise above the landscape, dividing golden savannas from lush islands of towering vegetation.

Each year, seasonal floodwaters replenish the surrounding floodplains, known locally as dambos. These fertile grasslands support large herds of grazing animals and, in turn, the predators that follow them.

From here, the journey continues north towards the Mupamadzi River system and Kasansanya Camp. Set at the confluence of a pristine tributary, the camp overlooks a sweeping bend in the Luangwa River, where hippos gather and seasonal colonies of colourful carmine bee-eaters create a spectacular display.

This remote and rugged wilderness offers exceptional wildlife encounters in complete seclusion.

On moving days between camps, guests may travel by vehicle, on foot, or enjoy a combination of both. Each journey is a full day of immersion in the African bush. While you relax beneath the shade of the trees, enjoying a gourmet packed lunch and a peaceful siesta, our experienced backup team relocates and prepares your next camp, ensuring a seamless arrival later that afternoon.
